about
Jo Thorpe can often be found curiously exploring, or just as likely lost in a labyrinth of
urban backstreets, but always captivated by a culture’s
presentation of their unique decorative arts.
Camera always at the ready, capturing and curating a personal collection of intrepid images,
whilst always observing the use of repetitive pattern and tessellation practices that create the distinct
decorative styles found in places of worship, community spaces and the family home.
This observation of colour and scale, of composition and use of line and curve, has led Jo
to start a pattern-based art practice of her own, Jo Thorpe Studio. A 3D form of expression has emerged
in the form of sculptural geometrics, a culmination of years of curiosity and intrigue.
An established career as a costume pattern maker in the global film industry led to a nomadic life
spent travelling abroad for work contracts, ranging from large scale live event ceremonies to
shooting international feature films on location.
Born in New Zealand, Jo Thorpe is a visual artist currently based in Sydney.
